Denial, The Unrequited Trilogy #1

Story Excerpt:
Tristan hated these goddamn fucking social events. So much so that he hadn’t even bothered to ask what this one was in aid of. It was bad enough that he had to organize the damn thing, never mind attend it. Why he even had to was beyond him. He was only the CEO of Bailey Airline after all, no one of great importance. Taking a deep breath, he put on his happy facade, huge shit-eating grin in place, and finally allowed his introduction to be made. Head held high, Tristan Bailey descended the grand staircase into the ballroom below, every pair of eyes in the room on him. All he had to do was welcome everyone and praise the charity. Then he could leave.

As he stepped up onto the podium the crowd cheered. Lights flashed wildly as the photographers called out his name, vying for attention. Giving them what they wanted, Tristan kept the fake smile securely in place. Preening some for their enjoyment as he winked at the cougars in attendance in order to curry their favors. He preened some for their enjoyment and winked at the cougars in attendance to curry their favors. Fuck, he hated that whorish behavior, yet it was expected of him. Finally getting serious, he addressed the room. “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It is an honor to have you all here tonight on this special occasion. I do so hope you are ready to spend a ridiculous amount of money. After all, it is for a good cause.” Tristan grinned wider as everyone clapped.

As the sound of his assistant’s sweet voice came over his earpiece Tristan smiled fondly. “Okay, Mr. Bailey, repeat after me.” The girl was a life-saver. His rock.

“When I was asked to host this fundraising event tonight I jumped at the chance. I mean, who wouldn’t want to participate and help out such an amazing cause?” As the crowd erupted in another round of cheers, Tristan gripped the ledge on the podium stand. “The AWAN Project was founded in order to raise awareness and empower wounded warriors. Veterans of wars past. Men and women who have risked their lives in order to save millions. Without their aid we may very well be living in a different world right now.” Tristan straightened his spine before inclining his head in the direction of Mr. Thompson, a veteran of the Vietnam war. “I think it is about time we recognized this, and in turn do whatever we can in order to repay their kindness. Their sacrifices. No matter how small.” Somewhere toward the back of the room someone whistled and clapped. “Hopefully tonight’s auction will raise enough money to help those men and women who need it. Don’t be shy now, ladies and gentlemen. It is for a great cause after all.”

With another of his world-famous grins Tristan winked at one of the female reporters before stepping down from the podium. Such fickle people, fawning and swooning over his money. None of them were truly interested in the man he was, or the real reasons for this function in the first place. It was all about the size of a person’s bank account, nothing more, and it was the main reason he hated doing these damn events. With a sigh, Tristan tucked his left hand into his pants pocket and made his way across the room to the bar, avoiding all conversation. He only needed to spend a half hour at the most pretending to be interested, then he could leave.

Rapping the top of the bar, he called for the barman’s attention. “JD and coke please, and make it a double.” Nodding once, the barman went to retrieve the drink, returning quickly with the amber liquid and cold coke from the fridge. When the younger man returned with the drink and placed it on the bar, Tristan said his thanks before finding a quiet table to sit down at. Thirty minutes and then he could leave again. That was it, thirty minutes, his support would be given and witnessed by all. Glancing around the room his eyes began to roam the crowd of people in attendance. He smiled and nodded when appropriate, praying that no-one would come to speak to him. He hated this. Still lacking interest he surveyed the main entrance of the room, and when Tristan’s eyes landed on the tall blond standing by the staircase his heart stopped. One word came to mind. Mine. A sudden unfamiliar surge of possession wrecked his body, leaving him shaken. He had to introduce himself. He needed to know who that was. Rising from his seat, he quickly made his way toward the beautiful blond.

“Yo, Bailey! How goes it, my man?”

At the sound of his cousin’s voice Tristan stilled momentarily. He loved his cousin, he truly did, but the guy had a habit of getting him into trouble. The one and only reason he tended to avoid him. “Callum, how are you, cousin? It’s been a while.”

With a snort the slightly shorter, dark-haired man replied. “You’re telling me. Two fucking years now. If I didn’t know how much of a damn weirdo you are I would think you were avoiding my ass.” Walking over, Callum grabbed him up in a big bear hug. The guy was huge, and freakishly strong, always had been. With a laugh, Tristan smacked him on the arm, growling to be released as the hired photographers for the nights fundraising event started snapping pictures. It wasn’t as if people didn’t know who the man embracing him was. They knew every goddamn detail of Tristan’s life. He just preferred to keep some things private.

“Let me go, asshat. This will be all over the damn internet tomorrow.” Smirking, Tristan nudged his cousin in the back. Callum dropped him with a laugh, causing Tristan to lose his footing. The grin on the other man’s face said he’d done it on purpose. The fucker. Tristan glared as he smoothed his jacket back into place before turning in the direction of the staircase, cursing at the realization that he had lost the blond.

Adult Excerpt:
“Fucking hell you taste so damn good.” Growling low in his throat, Josh devoured Tristan. His resolve was completely gone. He wanted this man with a fierceness he never felt in his life before. Not even with Awan. Grunting, he slipped his hands into Tristan’s jacket, shoving it off his shoulders before dragging it off his arms. As it tumbled to the floor Josh claimed Tristan’s mouth again, delving his tongue into the warm cavern to duel with his own. Tristan groaned, his hands clenching and unclenching where they gripped Josh’s biceps.

“Touch me. I know you want to. Touch me, Tristan.” Josh was startled by the desperation lacing his voice, but it didn’t stop him. He tore away Tristan’s clothes, exposing smooth pale skin. Not an inch of it marred by even a blemish. He was so fucking beautiful. Gripping Tristan’s shoulders Josh pushed him down onto the seat, following him over to place kisses to his collar bone and chest.

“Joshua. I—” Tristan’s words died on a moan as Josh captured one of his beaded nipples between his teeth, tugging lightly as his big hands roamed over Tristan’s finely muscled stomach. He arched and pleaded with Josh to take more, and he did. Reaching for the buttons on his pants, Josh slowly released Tristan’s cock. It was thick and ruddy, the bulbous head shining temptingly in the low light overhead.

“I’m going to taste you as you’ve tasted me in the past.” Without wasting another second Josh descended and wrapped his mouth around Tristan’s cock, stroking the pulsing shaft as he teased the head with blunt teeth. Josh moaned at the salty taste of him, at the way the thick vein throbbed against his tongue on the upward stroke. It had been so long since he had done anything like this, and he was glad he held out until Tristan walked into his life. He couldn’t see himself doing this with anyone else.

“Joshua. Damn baby. So fucking good.” Tristan chanted his name over and over again, tugging on his hair and arching beneath him with every slide of his mouth along his cock. It made him feel good knowing he could elicit this kind of reaction from Tristan. “Don’t stop! Fuck you, never stop.” Joshua groped and massaged Tristan’s balls, head bobbing up and down on his shaft. That thick delicious cock jerked and kicked in his mouth, the salty tang of cum coating his tongue. He could tell Tristan was close, and he didn’t want him to come like this. Pulling away he kissed a hot trail up over Tristan’s stomach and chest, reclaiming his mouth in a hard melding of lips.

“I want you. I can’t wait to get home.” Josh pushed Tristan’s pants down off his hips. “I don’t want our first time to be in the back of a damn car, but I can’t seem to stop myself.” Tristan groaned long and loud, forcing Josh’s mouth back to his for a slow sensual kiss that seemed to last a lifetime. They melted into each other, their movements unrushed as they tasted and savored, memorizing every delicious inch of the other’s perfect mouth. Tristan’s breath fanned Josh’s face, warming his flesh just as much as Tristan’s attentions had warmed his heart. It was a kiss which rocked his world and stole his breath, changing him forever, ruining Josh for all others.

When Tristan pulled away Josh’s head had cooled some, his breathing evening out as he leisurely ground his confined cock against Tristan’s. “There’s a hotel nearby. I own it. We could go there.” Tristan panted, sweat beading on his brow as he stared up at Josh.

“Okay, good. Let’s go there. I need to be inside you and I can’t wait any longer.”

Tristan hit the button on his armrest. “Stephen, take us to the Orchid.” No sooner had he released the button than Josh was on him again. His lust-addled mind urged him to fuck the guy here and now. Hard and fast. Josh’s cock jerked in response, his skin felt tight and his blood heated as he kissed and licked Tristan’s smooth hairless chest. His emotions were warring inside of him. He wanted Tristan, but thoughts of Awan and his past threatened to destroy his need for the man beneath him. It was killing him having to choose, but as Tristan groaned his mind cleared some and he knew what path he would take. He would have Tristan tonight.

When the car stopped it took everything in him to release Tristan. They were both panting hard, eyes never leaving the other as they righted their clothes. Without a word Tristan climbed from the car, Josh’s hand grasped tightly in his own. They walked through the main foyer of the hotel and straight into the elevator. Tristan removed a key from his back pocket and shoved it into the control panel. The twenty-first floor lit up as the elevator started.

“Tristan, why am I standing here alone?” Josh smirked as startled eyes met his own. Clutching the front of his wrinkled shirt Josh tugged Tristan back into his arms, flush against his chest. Their foreheads met. The sound of their combined panted breaths the only sound in the small compartment. Feeling braver than before Josh wrapped Tristan in a tight embrace, his hands roaming down over that tight ass to grip it firmly. “You have no idea how hard I’ve been fighting this, but no more. Tonight your ass is mine, Bailey.” The last was said on a groan as Tristan moved the last few centimetres to bring their lips back together. They took their time with this kiss, exploring one another’s mouths, suckling on lips and tongues as their hands caressed and fondled. When the elevator came to a stop Joshua walked Tristan backward out of it, not even taking notice of their surroundings as he pinned the guy to the nearest wall.

Review: The Chosen by J.R Ward

Blurb:
Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.

Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.

As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

Review:
Yeah, so, unbelievably, this about sums up how I'm feeling about the latest instalment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. . .

As a big BDB fan, and a major Qhuay fangirl, I am honestly disappointed in this book. Now, be warned ladies and gents, I am about to go into rant mode and Spoilers are inevitable. So if you don't want to know what happens, back away from the screen, now!

First off I'm going to address the car wreck that is my Qhuinn. What. In. The. Holy. Fuck. I am still reeling from that bullshite he pulled in the beginning of the book. It was so NOT Qhuinn. Granted the male is hotheaded and stubborn, but he loves the ever-living-hell out of both Blay and Layla, and despite his anger or insecurities he has respected them throughout the series. So, for him to go batshit crazy saying the things he did, and then pulling a gun on the mahmen of his young, while she was fecking holding them, before pointing it at his mate!! -deep breath- Did I mention that the thing went off. Shots fired!!! He broke both their hearts!! Acted like a total dickwad! And for the first time ever I wanted to reach into the book and bitch slap him. In that moment in time he totally deserved a father of the year/best husband award. So not good. I did not like that all. I hated reading every second of the Q/Blay/Layla mess up. -exhales- I cried over that shit! Angry tears! Why ruin a good thing?

Another male who was portrayed as a total dick was Tohrment. The usually level headed leader of the group. The one who hangs off his Lord's every word. He too lost his freaking mind and willingly committed Treason! Whaaaaaa... Why? There was no need. None.

In my opinion, it was out of character for both males, and totally unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. Xcor and his Band of Bastards were forgiven their indiscretions and accepted into the fold easily enough. There was no need to make Q and Tohr the bad guys in order to make readers melt for Xcor. I personally have always had a soft spot for the male, especially from the moment he refused to take Layla's vein under their tree. My love for him has bloomed. And I am sure the outcome of the story would have been the same without making Q and Tohr into a pack of asshats.

Another thing I would like to point out is V's behaviour. -throws hands up- I really don't get it. Why put him with a mate he never seems to be happy with? How many times are V and Jane going to go through bullshite before they find their happiness, or break up!? I don't like this. We all know in reality nothing is simple. Love comes and it goes. But in the world of fictional romance, that's not the case. And with the vampires in BDB their mates are everything to them! Sacred. More important than their own lives, and even that of their young! This is something we've seen repeatedly throughout the series, more so with Z and Wrath when their shellans were pregnant, we even saw this with Q and Layla. So why is V always pouting around and causing issues with his mate? I feel for Jane, and really want to throat punch V. Ward has gone too far this time, crossed a line I refuse to go over myself. I hate a cheater. Its disgusting, and disrespectful, and nasty. The mere fact that V is contemplating cheating is a huge betrayal. So regardless of the outcome, it is not a storyline I wish to follow. I'm done with that.

-deep breath-

Now that I've gotten that off my chest I'll get to Xcor and Layla's relationship. I'm happy that they have finally gotten what they wanted. I like this pairing. I felt for them both. Cried for Xcor and his mistreatment in the past. Cheered when they finally got to be together. Yet, I would have wanted more for them. More romance! Where was the romance Layla waited her entire life for? I remember a time when Ward wrote an entire book about her protagonists. Now they are lucky to get half of one. There were too many side stories going on, unnecessary side stories, and it took from Xcor and Layla's story.  And to be honest, I was too busy reeling from the Brother's behaviour that I'm sure I've missed loads of good things happening between Xcor and his Chosen. They deserved better.

Hopefully we'll see more of them in the future, yet even as I say that, I honestly doubt I'll be able to read another instalment if I'm going to get more of the same. -sighs- I'm so disappointed.
