Author Spotlight; Laurie Hunsaker

Welcome my lovlies. Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing the amazing Laurie Hunsaker, author of Highland Destiny. Hello there Laurie, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Why don’t you start by telling something about yourself, and your background?

Laurie: Hi! Thanks so much for having me! I started writing in elementary school where my best friend and I wrote a scary story, which I think is still at my mom’s house! I always remember writing. Maybe it tapered off during college, but getting a couple degrees and holding down two jobs really tends to cut into your free time. I have degrees in English Literature, and German with a Minor in Spanish. I taught for a few years, but writing is really my passion.

Amara: Oh, a scary story, really? I'd love to get a peek at that! What inspired you to write?

Laurie: Actually my husband did. I was complaining about a book, and said something like, “Even I can write better than this!” And he very sarcastically said, “Then do it.” So I did.

Amara: And we are all grateful you did. I love Highland Destiny. So, what have you written to date?

Laurie: I have a free short story called Amethyst Heat, There’s Highland Destiny, Highland Games. Then I have some short stories: RONE Award Honourable Mention Highlander Reborn, The Broken Highlander, and Highland Eclipse.

Amara: I really enjoyed reading your books, I'm a sucker for a hulking big Highlander! For those of us not in the know, what genre are your books, and what drew you to this genre?

Laurie: Most of my books are Scottish Time Travels, but my Nightkind stories are about Vampires...kilted vampires. ;)

I wanted to write Highlanders, but I wanted more modern heroines. Time Travels are perfect for that!

Amara: Nothing wrong with a kilted Vampire... loads of sexiness to be had! What are you working on at the minute?

Laurie: I have a couple of things. My goal is to finish up Highland Betrayal, for sure. I’m also co-writing a super secret project with a friend, and I have high hopes for it! And I have another short story I hope to have out by the end of summer.

Amara: Ooh this super secret project has piqued my interest!! And I look forward to the release of your other books. In your opinion, what is the hardest thing about writing?

Laurie: For me, it’s finding the time. With 3 kids, one of whom is a baby, I’m really limited to writing between their sports, activities, and naps.

Amara: I know exactly what you mean, I three lil darlings of my own, it isn't easy. Where do you find your inspiration? Day-dreams? Fantasies? Real life experiences?

Laurie: The simple answer? Everywhere. I hear lyrics in a song, I think of a scene. I see someone post a picture on twitter, I need to write that into a book. I don’t sleep much, and often I’m up at night plotting. There are notepads all over the house with hastily written ideas.

Amara: And on that note, how do you do your research? Leave nothing out!!

Laurie: Because I write about Scotland in a certain time, I have to look up that era, find out what was going on, not just in Scotland, but in England, on the Continent, or even in the Americas. A great example, is that I had to find out when coffee would have been exported to Scotland. Would it be out of place to have coffee at breakfast in 1792? Politically, I need to know more than just the main area of government, but I need to know what’s going on in the clans. I try to use real names, and real people so I can stick to the truth as much as possible.

I have several books on Scotland and Ireland, but I look online a lot as well. I now have a contact in Dublin who I can email if I need help with something too (he’s a history professor). My folks grab me books every time they go back to Ireland and Scotland, which is pretty much once or twice a year.

Amara: Of all the books you have written, who is your favourite character and why?

Laurie: I think I love Nevin. He’s my darkest hero so far. I don’t know why, maybe because I feel like he needs a little extra love.

Amara: If there was only one of your books you could will people to buy, which would it be?

Laurie: I think Highland Games doesn’t get enough love. I love Colm and his sense of humor.

Amara: I enjoyed his story too, we must share the love!! Where can you see yourself in five years time?

Laurie: Oh I truly hope that I will be writing full time. My youngest will be in school by that point, so I would hopefully have all day to myself!

Amara: What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Laurie: Just keep writing. Whether you think you’ll ever publish it or not, just keep writing. If you stop, it’s too easy to get stuck and you find that you won’t go back to your story as often.

Amara: Once again thank you for stopping by my dear, it has been a pleasure!

Out of the Box Series
The journey of lust and love of Virginia and her vampire lover Anando.

Book One
Out of the Box – the complete series

The first time Virginia went to the dance club On The Edge, she only wanted to find out what a night in a vampire’s arms would be like. Anando showed her it could be much, much more than she had imagined.

Over the next few months, every time she returned he continued to stretch her imagination and the boundaries she tried to set on their relationship.

Soon, though, Anando’s limits were tested as much as Virginia’s when their sexual encounters gave way to feelings neither of them had expected.

Part One is available as a FREE eBook. Read HERE

Book Two
Living Out of the Box

The very first time Virginia spent a night with the vampire Anando, she couldn’t have begun to imagine all the sensual and sexual games she would experience with him. She also couldn’t have imagined that she would fall in love with him, or he with her.

As she moves in with him and they find their places in each other’s lives, the discoveries start again. A few of them happen through old games revisited: roleplay, public sex or a familiar dildo in a different hand. Other discoveries come through new toys, some battery-operated, others custom-made to fit just right. And yet more discoveries come from playing with old and new partners.

But in the end, the one lesson that remains the same might be the most important of all: love.

About Kallysten
My most exciting accomplishment to date was to cross a few thousand miles and an ocean to pursue (and catch!) the love of my life. I have been writing for over fifteen years, and I’ve always enjoyed sharing my stories and listening to the readers’ reactions.

After playing with science fiction, short stories, poetry and fanfiction, I am now trying my hand, heart and words at romance novels and I am very excited to have my stories published as ebooks.

My first novels were published by Linden Bay Romance in 2005. The defunct Venus Press subsequently published a few of my short stories. Because so many of my stories are linked as series and part of the same universe, I decided it would make sense to have them all in the same place, which is why I decided to self-publish, first with Alinar then on my own. When I see calls for submissions that speak to my muse, I sometimes try for them, and was published this way by Samhain (Moonlust) and Torquere(Christmas Magic, The Thirteenth Halloween).

When I’m not writing – which isn’t all that often! – I devour books, work in my vegetables patch or at my real-life job, put small quilts together for friends, and try to exercise more. Where do I sign up for days that are 30 hours long?

You can contact me, if you have questions or comments.

Author Spotlight; Kallie Renae

Hello, my darlings. Today I am joined by the lovely Kallie Renae, a close friend and up and coming author of paranormal and contemporary romance. Now let us have a little chat and show my girl some love.

Amara: So, Kallie, why don’t you start by telling us how your interest in writing originated?

Kallie: Hello everyone. Thank you for having me here today. Well, to be honest, I never thought I had a huge interest in writing before a few years ago. I wrote small, minor things, mostly poetry while growing up. You know, to empty out the emotions of life that would build up. I was an enormous reader though. I loved being sucked into different worlds, no matter what genre it was. My blossoming love of writing came around four years ago when I stumbled upon what is called roleplaying, of course with words though. I mean how awesome is it to see some of your most beloved book characters and created from anew characters come to life, in a sense, and be able to interact with them. It opened up my imagination to epic proportions. From there, I was like...Hey, I can do that. I mean I always had people in my head, screaming at me that they lived some crazy lives, been through some crazy things. I simply just ignored them for the most. I know, shameful right. Anyways, my beloved stories, beloved characters and worlds have been the forefront of my life since.

Amara: Ah, kindred spirits you and I. I know exactly what you mean, and of course I also know how amazing your RP is, it’s where I fell in love. Anywho, can you tell us a little about your current work in progress?

Kallie: Ah, I would love to. Tristan Alieus is his name, and this male has been a stubborn but very important part of my life for years now. He lives in a world of chaos which we have both laughed and cried in, and I have begun to chronicle his life in the first of three books 'Chronicles of Madness: Hell's Burden.' Believe me, it’s a very complicated life.

Tristan wanted no part of the war between Heaven and Hell. He wanted a peaceful life, a simple life yet a life that was filled with magic. Too bad none of those things were in his stars. Torn from his happiness, through intended and unintended destiny, his only comfort now was a never ending battle against Heaven, Hell and Himself.

Amara: *le sigh* As a fangirl of Mr. Alieus I cannot wait to get my grubby hands on him, *cough* I mean his books! Hehe. What initially inspired you to write this book?

Kallie: A lot actually. Tristan carries many traits of myself and moments of my life. I'll let you all figure out which belong to him and which belong to me. *wink* Paths taken, emotions felt and happiness/chaos lost and found, I believe are a stronghold of many people’s daily lives. Some to lower degrees of others, and some to higher. Those moments to me should never be truly buried. I simply created a more fascinating outlet to showcase them all.

Amara: Was there any specific reason you choose this genre?

Kallie: I would have to say yes. To me, I think that when people hear the word paranormal, they instinctively think...perfection. Let me explain that more. Paranormal automatically brings about Gods and Goddess', vampires and werewolves, witches and ghosts and everything in between, but it also brings about immunity. Immune to pain. Immune to loss. Immune to love. In a sense, immune to normal. I want to show normal. I want to show the world that you can have someone who is magical, who is paranormal incarnate but still have and feel the humanity that can lift us up and cut us down like no other.

Amara: No truer words, my lovely. Tell us, is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Kallie: Oh yes! Am I allowed to say 'writing itself.' lol. I'm kidding. I would have to say the hardest part of my writing is when I get into the emotional side of the story. The private moments that any person would willingly choose to keep to themselves because they either hurt so much or elated you so much. Not the sex, I tend to think I'm pretty decent at that part *wink wink* but the heart clenching moments, the can't-see-straight-because-I'm-crying-like-Niagra-Falls moments. The real moments. Those are the times that I become so closed off from everything and everyone that being able to actually write is nil impossible.

Amara: What do you hope to achieve from publishing Tristan’s story?

Kallie: Reality moment but ultimately that's an easy one. I hope to encourage. I hope to engage even just one person to see past the existential expectations of what others hold you to, and become happy with yourself as you stay true to yourself. Wrong choices, right choices and all. If I can enthrall your mind and heart with some crazy madness and a hot, hunky male while doing that then score for me.

Amara: You’ve won my heart already, babe, believe me. I am Tristan’s! Okay, where do you see things heading for our guy in the future?

Kallie: Ohhhh, well I can't give away too much now can I, but I can tell you that Tristan's journey takes many turbulent turns and maybe just maybe, his final destination will lead him to the peace he always wanted.

That sound perfect to me. As I’ve said a million time over, this is one story I cannot wait to read. I love this character and see many great things in both your futures. Thank you for stopping by today, my lovely. I wish you all the best in the upcoming months and with your submission of Tristan’s story.

Welcome darlings. Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing the scrumptious Jessica Stevens, author of Behind The Makeup. Hello hello my lovely, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Why don’t you start by telling us about your new book?

Hello Amara, thanks so much for having me over.

Elizabeth Rhey is home on her final tour, and she has come back to where it all began, Wembley Stadium. A stone throw away from where she grew up. Where her brother still lives and spends most of his time in and out of prison for burglary and drug offences. A burglary gone wrong leads to a police chase and a horrific crash that claims his, and another’s life, and left another critically ill.

After identifying his body, Beth has to go through his personal possessions with the police, where a large sum of money is discovered. Unable to explain how her jobless brother had such an amount of money, the police hold on to the money pending further investigations.

At home with her bodyguard, Gareth Buchanan, things turn personal when a demand for money is put through her front room window. Gareth contacts the police and is faced with his own ghost as his old police partner, detective Ray Jones heads up the investigation. The reason he left the force has been there every time he closes his eyes for the last three years. Only now he can’t run away as he did before. Beth needs his help and as the case unfolds, they quickly realise that there is no one else Beth can trust.

The biatch is back!

Once again I find myself battling the pirates of the book world, copyright infringement, and one hell of a headache!

Copyright infringement is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission, infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work, or to make derivative works. The copyright holder is typically the work's creator, or a publisher or other business to whom copyright has been assigned. Copyright holders routinely invoke legal and technological measures to prevent and penalize copyright infringement. Copyright infringement disputes are usually resolved through direct negotiation, or a notice and take down process....

Several months back I had my first experience in dealing with copyright infringement; or book piracy. It was not a pleasant experience, yet I got through it unscathed. This was due to the careful guidance of my fellow authors. With their help I was able to contact all parties involved, and have my work removed from the illegal downloading sites. I was pleased that things were resolved so quickly as I have heard bad experiences from other authors, specifically Indy authors, on how uncooperative and rude the admin of some pirating forums can be. My interactions had been polite, and reassurance had been given on the fact that it would not happen again. So, you can imagine my reaction when I came across my ebooks being illegally shared yet again on said sites. It was quite disheartening.

This time around I found free illegal copies of Denial (The Unrequited Trilogy #1) on four different forums, which lead to five different external downloading sites. And my latest release Betrayal (The Unrequited Trilogy #2) on one forum with two external downloading sites attached to it. It took some time but I eventually emailed every site admin, bar one. The site in question had no contact links or details at all. Luckily I was able to contact the external site, but the fact that the original forum cannot be contacted bothers me, even though I know it is pointless worrying as once the downloading links have been removed this post will be rendered nil and void. It's all just a huge time wasting pain in the ass. All I can do now is wait for a positive response from my emails.

I know there isn't much I can do to fight ebook piracy, yet what little I can do is enough to give me peace of mind. If I have to I will contact every single site admin I come across which has my work illegally shared on it. I will plea with the readers to be honest and buy their ebooks from the appropriate retailers. I would ask them all to please remember that this is the lively hood of many hard working men and women; not only authors but musicians, artists and filmakers, we are talking about. People who those involved in piracy are stealing from. Piracy is frustrating, disheartening, and cruel.  How would you feel in their shoes?

Domination and Submission

In the stories of James Wood, a cast of characters live out their lives in the fictional town of Grand Falls. Themes of domination and submission are woven into tales of sensual depravity. Each episode draws the reader further into a world of dark forbidden pleasures – a world in which to immerse oneself and surrender to temptation.

Paula's Place

Little did I think, when I returned to Grand Falls, that my life would utterly change. Where once I was hollow, now I am full. Where I doubted of the existence of love, now it holds me tight in its grip. I am no longer the innocent girl; I am blissful, complete, and knowing. He has opened my eyes to the world. I am his and I have flowered.

Yet before you can hope to understand of what I speak, we must return to the beginning...

This is Paula's story - a steamy, explicit erotic romance of surrender and dark passions. Paula is drawn to a handsome neighbour with secrets in his past, but it is her own hidden fantasies that come to life as he pays his attentions to her. Paula has not only found a lover, she's found herself, her heart ... her Place.

I am no longer the innocent girl; I am blissful, complete, and knowing.

Paula is drawn into her lover's world of domination and submission, where sensation and lust commingle with intimacy and trust. Paula has never experienced so much from another; nor given so much of herself. As Paula surrenders not only her body but her heart, she recalls her lover's warning: If you stay, there will be no leaving.

I am no longer the innocent girl... I belong to him.

Paula's romance with her handsome neighbor has led to her submissive awakening, but she struggles to reconcile her inescapable feelings with her concern that things are going too fast. Then too there are unanswered questions both about Max's past and Paula's future. As her slide towards bliss only gathers pace, how will their love affair end? Does she even have a choice, or is her submission complete?
